The Senior Attorney – Labor & Employment is responsible for providing legal advice and counsel on all labor and employment issues, including managing employment claims and litigation.  The Senior Attorney – Labor & Employment will assist the SVP and General Counsel and other Executives in setting various labor and employment strategies and policies.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advise on employment and labor laws (including amendments) that impact operations and corporate strategies.
  • Serve as legal advisor on employee relations matters.
  • Oversee employment claims and litigation.
  • Assess and manage labor grievances; work closely with senior leadership in Employee Relations & Compliance.
  • Judge the merits of employment matters and labor grievances filed against the company. Work  with the appropriate executive(s) to define a strategic defense and approve settlements of disputes where warranted.
  • Provide advice and counsel during labor contract negotiations.
  • Participate in the definition and development of corporate policies, procedures, and programs; and provide continuing counsel and guidance on legal matters and on legal implications of all matters.
  • Present recurrent training on corporate policies.
  • Prepare periodic reports and summaries on employment and labor matters.
  • Manage and evaluate outside counsel.
  • Support the SVP and General Counsel in all other matters as needed.
  • Up to 15% travel, domestic and international.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Undergraduate degree and Juris Doctorate earned from an accredited law school.
  • Bar Admission(s).
  • 8-12 years of experience as a practicing employment litigation lawyer, preferably with a prominent  national law firm before moving to an in-house position.
  • Experience in directing strategy and managing complex litigation cases.
  • Experience with employment and labor law (expertise with CA and/or NY laws preferred).
  • Ideal candidate will have considerable experience with the Railway Labor Act.
  • Experience collaborating with labor unions.
  • Experience managing outside counsel and supervising support staff in a corporation; experience with cost-effective management of outside legal resources.
