Job Summary

The Cost Estimator collects and assembles the cost inputs and data to produce price bids and change orders for projects and contract work. The Cost Estimator works closely with internal stakeholders (engineering, operations, technical resources) and external suppliers and subcontractors to approximate the cost of completing a project, considering labor, materials, equipment, commercial conditions and schedule duration.  Reports to the Senior Cost Engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Use detailed spreadsheets and company-approved formulas to calculate projected costs for identified sales opportunities
  • Analyze customer requirements, Requests for Proposals, technical specifications and drawing sets to identify required materials, scope, equipment, subtrades and all resources required to produce turnkey pricing
  • Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to solicit pricing, qualify scope of supply and evaluate/negotiate cost
  • Facilitate collaboration between sales, engineering, and operations resources to compile comprehensive cost inputs
  • Produce price bids, project budgets and change orders for external submission and other cost data required for management reporting
  • Interface with Finance department, adhere to financial, business and project processes and produce cost data and financial reports as required for executive Management
  • Prepare schedules of value, cost-control worksheets, budgets, and reports for use by Project Management
  • Perform Earned Value and Estimate At/To Completion Analysis

Minimum Requirements

  • 5+ years of cost estimating experience in one or more of the following fields: industrial automation, operations, and maintenance, industrial, mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, industrial/commercial construction projects
  • Able to demonstrate working knowledge of the fundamental of cost estimating with the ability to breakdown construction and maintenance scopes into logical sequences and components
  • Work additional hours when needed to provide cost estimates in a timely manner to meet deadlines
  • Self-motivated and directed, critical thinking and solid decision-making skills are a must.
  • Legal authorization to work in US.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience as a Project Manager or Controller, understanding of PMI Project Cost Management processes including planning, estimating, budgeting, and controlling are a plus
  • Understating of Union, Prevailing, and Responsible wages is a plus
  • Very strong mathematical and computer skills including advanced working knowledge of MS Excel
  • Professional level communication skills to interact with various stakeholders effectively and clearly
  • Extremely Detail Oriented; Project plans involve a large degree of detailed information, and cost-estimating mistakes can be potentially costly.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to able to operate in a fast-paced environment, juggle multiple tasks.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer.
  • Walk short distances.
  • Reach above and/or below shoulder.
  • Handle/grasp documents or office equipment.
  • Sit and/or stand for short or extended periods of time.
  • Lift/carry/move objects, files and documents up to 10 pounds.
  • Work in an office environment using standard office equipment.
  • Talk, listen, and speak clearly on telephone.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards
  • Provide accurate weekly/monthly performance reporting
